Clinical Nurse Specialist
I am an adult and paediatric trained nurse and have also undertaken courses in orthopaedics and cleft care. I became interested in caring for people with a cleft and their families in 1990 when I was a paediatric staff nurse. I developed this interest by undertaking the cleft nursing course and I became a clinical nurse specialist in cleft care in 2004. Along with the Lead CNS we initiated and developed the CNS role in the Southern part of the Spires Cleft team. The CNS team provides specialist advice and care for children and their families from antenatal diagnosis through to 20 years of age, this spans community and hospital care. We cover a large geographic area and are available 365 days a year.
I have a particular interest in the development of patient information and am editor of the parent information booklet. I am committed to empowering the families I look after in their cleft journey. I teach other health care professionals and belong to the Clinical Excellence Nursing Group. This enables me to further my knowledge through lectures and networking. I am also involved in initial recruiting for related research projects, audit and collection of data.
