Spires at the British Society of Special Care Dentistry National Conference

On Thursday 7th May, the Spires Cleft Centre team were invited to present at the BSSCD national conference on the theme of multidisciplinary working.

The conference celebrated 50 years of the British Society of Special Care Dentistry and was  hosted at Kings’ College London by their President, Prof Tim Newton.

We were delighted to be able to showcase how we approach complex patient care in a collaborative way to our allied dental colleagues. Spires team members presented from their own specialty view point: from surgery, nursing, speech therapy, ENT, psychology and the dental specialities of orthodontics and restorative dentistry, with additional shared presentations between specialties highlighting the flexible patient focussed approach we take in planning and delivering care from birth to adulthood for patients born with a cleft.  It was a unique opportunity for us to come together as a team to give such an overview which we enjoyed and benefited from ourselves.

Tim said:  “I was delighted that the members of the Spires Cleft Centre were able to take the time to present to our Society. Not only were we able to witness the incredible specialist care that the team deliver, but in addition we came to understand the core values underpinning their compassionate, patient-focused approach. Amongst those values were: A shared vision of care; Respect (for each other, the patient and their family); Open communication; and Curiosity. There is a strong sense of psychological safety within the team. I cannot thank them enough for their contribution.”
