Early Years clinic

This clinic is for children up to the age of 3 years old.  It provides an opportunity to meet the team if you have had a baby with a cleft lip and / or palate.

You might also be seen in this clinic if we are planning an operation, or your child has recently had an operation.

What to expect

We will ask questions about your baby’s development so far and aim to answer any questions you might have. It is helpful to bring along your Red Book with information about their weight, etc.

We will need to have a look inside your baby’s mouth. Although children often cry, this doesn’t hurt them. We will help you position them comfortably. Often it is best to hold your baby facing you with their feet at your stomach. You can then lie your baby down with their head on the doctor’s lap. This gives us a good view of their mouth and palate.

If your baby needs an operation, the surgeon will use this time to explain the procedure to you and answer any questions or worries you might have. It is a good idea to note down any questions you would like to ask before you come to the appointment.

Sometimes we have visitors in this clinic, often people who are learning about what we do.  If there are too many people in the room, please do not hesitate to request that only the essential clinicians are present.
