A successful one-day CAPS-A refresher course took place on Thursday 13th June at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.
CAPS-A (Cleft Audit Protocol for Speech- Augmented) is a comprehensive training package for reporting cleft speech outcomes. This training programme consists of in-depth theoretical and practical training on the CAPS-A tool, with a final self-assessment task and certificate of course completion.
Lucy McAndrew is a CAPS-A national trainer and Speech and Language Therapist working in Oxford. She was joined by Helen Extence, the Lead Speech and Language Therapist from the Welsh Cleft Centre to run the one-day refresher course for a group of cleft specialist SLTs from around the UK.
The one-day refresher course is suitable for SLTs who have completed the original CAPS-A training course and would like an update on current recommended practice and developments in current thinking regarding the CAPS-A tool and its uses.
The day ran smoothly and the feedback from the course was very positive – with SLTs valuing the experience of listening to and discussing cleft palate speech together in the same room!
Lucy is now busy preparing to run a 2.5 day national CAPS-A course on 1-3rd October 2024 – again to be hosted in Oxford!
