Marc Swan

I was appointed as Clinical Director for the Spires Cleft Centre for both Oxford and Salisbury in January 2022. Twenty years earlier I was a Senior House Officer with the cleft team at the Radcliffe Infirmary before commencing my doctorate at the Nuffield Department of Surgery in 2003.

On completing my higher surgical training within the Oxford Deanery in 2012, I undertook specialist cleft training at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada, and then at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London. I have been a full time Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust since 2014.

I undertake the primary surgical management of children referred to the Spires Cleft Centre and help to care for families from antenatal diagnosis to adulthood.

My interests include the wider scope of paediatric plastic surgery, trans-oral robotic cleft surgery and secondary cleft surgery including speech surgery and rhinoplasty. I am committed to training the cleft surgeons of the future – both here in the UK and in the developing world. I am also passionate about research, with a focus on improving aesthetic and functional outcomes in children with orofacial clefts, incorporating patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) into everyday clinical practice, and harnessing the potential for machine learning.

If you have any questions about the Spires Cleft Service, would like to know more about the remarkable work that we undertake, or would like to support our charitable endeavours then please do not hesitate to contact us via this website.
